From turning ocean plastic into new products to transforming waste into energy, these trailblazing companies are reshaping how we think about waste and sustainability. In celebration of Global Recycling Day on March 18, we shine a light on eight game-changing startups that are not only tackling the waste problem head-on but are also building a more circular economy for the future.
1. Terracycle (USA) – Founded in 2001
- Focus: Recycling hard-to-recycle waste.
- Innovation: Terracycle is famous for tackling waste that traditional recycling companies can’t handle, such as cigarette butts, crisp packets and beauty product packaging. They partner with large corporations to create recycling programs and are also launching zero-waste boxes for consumers.
2. Loliware (USA) – Founded in 2015
- Focus: Biodegradable products to reduce plastic waste.
- Innovation: Loliware produces edible, seaweed-based cups and straws as alternatives to single-use plastics. They focus on providing sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives to plastic packaging, making it both practical and innovative.
3. The Ocean Cleanup (Netherlands) – Founded in 2013
- Focus: Cleaning up ocean plastics.
- Innovation: The Ocean Cleanup is developing technologies to remove plastic from the oceans. They use large floating barriers to collect plastic waste, which is then brought back to shore for recycling or reprocessing.
4. Renewlogy (USA) – Founded in 2011
- Focus: Plastic-to-fuel technology.
- Innovation: Renewlogy converts hard-to-recycle plastic waste into usable fuel. They’ve developed a system that breaks down plastic waste through a process called pyrolysis, creating usable oil, diesel and gasoline from waste materials.
5. Paptic (Finland) – Founded in 2015
- Focus: Sustainable alternative to plastic packaging.
- Innovation: Paptic has developed a sustainable, recyclable alternative to plastic bags and packaging. Their product is made from renewable wood fibers and is designed to be fully recyclable and biodegradable.
6. Carbios (France) – Founded in 2011
- Focus: Biodegradable plastics and enzymatic recycling.
- Innovation: Carbios is working on enzymatic recycling to break down plastic waste into its base components, enabling the creation of new plastic products. They focus on PET plastics, which are commonly used in bottles and packaging, making recycling more efficient.
7. Brightmark (USA) – Founded in 2016

- Innovation: Brightmark is working on a breakthrough chemical recycling technology that converts plastic waste into valuable products, including fuels, chemicals, and new plastics. They also focus on diverting waste from landfills and turning it into clean energy.
8. Blackcircle (UK) – Founded in 2019
- Focus: Recycling of rubber from tires.
- Innovation: Blackcircle focuses on the recycling of waste rubber, particularly from used tires. They are developing solutions to turn these materials into new products, like sustainable footwear or playground surfaces, reducing tire waste and promoting circular economy solutions.
