Lloyds Banking Group has partnered with Dynatrace to achieve its sustainability goals, including a 75% reduction in direct carbon emissions.
The UK-based banking group has set the goal to reduce the carbon emissions it finances >50% by 2030 on the path to net zero by 2050, it is also looking to achieve net zero in its own operations by 2030.
This is where the partnership with Dynatrace comes in. Its Carbon Impact app, released just last year, leverages AI to provide answers and automation opportunities from data at an enormous scale. For Lloyds Banking Group, this will be applied to its IT ecosystem in an effort to assess the visibility and impact of its IT carbon emissions.
By analysing data on resource utilisation, such as CPU, memory, disk, and network I/O, Carbon Impact calculates the corresponding CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions and identifies areas for optimisation.

This helps us identify more meaningful opportunities to optimise our digital infrastructure and will be a critical step forward as we work to reduce our operational sector’s direct carbon emissions by at least 75%.”
The collaboration between Lloyds and Dynatrace extends beyond Lloyds’ own operations. Dynatrace is working to further develop the Carbon Impact app to support hybrid and multicloud environments, enabling a wider range of businesses to reduce their IT carbon footprint.

The increasing reliance on digital technologies calls for more focus on their environmental impact. Research from Cloudflare in 2023 suggests that switching to cloud-based network systems can significantly reduce carbon emissions, highlighting the potential for businesses to make a positive impact through their IT choices.
