S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI) has released the results of its annual Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI), a global benchmark for leading companies in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.
The index, established in 1999, aims to guide investors towards sustainable investments by identifying companies with a strong commitment to ESG principles.
The selection process draws from over 13,000 businesses who were invited to participate in the S&P’s Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), a score-based analysis of their sustainability practices which compares business by assessing a mix of 80-100 cross-industry and industry-specific questions.
Only 3,500 of the world’s largest companies were eligible for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices. ESG Scores based on the assessment are available via the public S&P Global ESG Scores website, and percentile ranks based on those scores are shared on the Bloomberg Professional platform.
“The rigour of our Corporate Sustainability Assessment is what makes identifying these companies possible,” said Douglas Peterson, President & CEO of S&P Global. “Over the past 24 years the CSA has grown into a leading corporate sustainability database.”
This year’s review brought significant changes to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, with several companies added and others removed based on their ESG performance. Notable additions include Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings, American multinational tobacco company Philip Morris International, and cloud computing platform ServiceNow.
Conversely, three of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies—Swiss Novartis, American Amgen, and Swedish AstraZeneca, renowned for its COVID-19 vaccine—were removed from the DJSI.
Several companies maintained their position in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, including South Korean electronics giant LG Electronics, German financial services provider Allianz, and Japanese camera manufacturer Nikon. Allianz, in particular, received a score of 82 out of 100 in the CSA, calling it an, “incentive to continue our work!”
