GE Vernova and AWS have partnered to expand AWS’s data centre network while addressing energy demand and grid security. With Amazon investing over $100 billion in cloud and AI, GE Vernova will provide substation solutions, power generation, and renewable energy across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Energy equipment manufacturer GE Vernova and AWS have signed a strategic framework agreement to support AWS’s data centre expansion while addressing global energy demand, grid security and decarbonisation of electric power systems.
The agreement comes as Amazon increases its investment in cloud and AI infrastructure, with over $100 billion allocated to data centre expansion in 2024 alone. This surge in development has led to a sharp rise in energy consumption, pushing data centre operators to explore alternative power sources to meet demand.
Expanding data centre electrification and decarbonisation
Under this agreement, GE Vernova will provide AWS with solutions for electrifying and decarbonising data centres across North America, Europe, and Asia. The collaboration will focus on:
- Electrification systems – GE Vernova will supply turnkey substation solutions to connect AWS data centres to the grid, providing electrical equipment, project management, and construction support across multiple sites. Both companies’ engineering teams will continue working together to optimise substation design and delivery.
- Renewable energy development – AWS and GE Vernova will explore commercialising onshore wind projects to support renewable energy adoption.
- Power generation and energy innovation – The partnership will also include power generation equipment and services for AWS, as well as collaboration with GE Vernova’s accelerator businesses in research, consulting, and financing to advance energy transition efforts. GE Vernova’s gas division has also seen rising demand for its natural gas turbines, partly driven by increased data centre energy needs. The company’s turbines are now powering the first Stargate AI infrastructure site in Texas, a $500 billion joint initiative by OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank, and the White House to build large-scale AI computing hubs.
AWS cloud services to support GE Vernova’s digital transformation
Pablo Koziner, CCO, GE Vernova, said: “We are excited to work in collaboration with AWS as they advance their computing capabilities and data centre capacity. We believe that GE Vernova is well positioned through its broad portfolio of energy products and services to help AWS obtain reliable, cost effective, and more sustainable electricity for its data centres in support of their growth objectives. We appreciate the opportunity to work strategically with a company that embraces innovative solutions and values strong collaboration.”
As part of the collaboration, AWS will provide cloud solutions to help GE Vernova’s digital transformation, such as cloud migration, AI adoption, and high-performance computing. The integration of AWS cloud services aims to:
- Enhance GE Vernova’s operational efficiency through big data analytics and AI.
- Support advanced digital technologies with large-scale computational power.
- Improve sustainability efforts by embedding cloud-based energy management solutions into GE Vernova’s core operations.
AWS will also continue working with GE Vernova’s Electrification Software business, supporting cloud deployments of software for the electric grid, power generation, and manufacturing industries.
Advancing grid security and energy transition
“Through this expanded collaboration with GE Vernova, we’ll be able to accelerate data and energy efficiencies, driving reliable and more sustainable operations,” said Howard Gefen, GM, energy & utilities, AWS. “Our shared goals of addressing increased global energy demand, advancing grid security, and decarbonising electric power systems will help our customers across the globe.”
AWS and GE Vernova have previously collaborated on cloud-based software solutions for electric utilities, energy providers, and industrial businesses. Several of GE Vernova’s GridOS software applications and Asset Performance Management tools are already hosted on AWS Cloud, supporting grid security, energy optimisation, and digital infrastructure management.
The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
