Canadian lithium resource company, E3 Lithium, has announced the successful production of battery grade lithium carbonate, and launched phase 1 of a demonstration facility.
Producing battery grade lithium carbonate, the entire phase 1 site is running effectively, with direct lithium extraction (DLE) processing through to the final purification steps.
E3 announced that lithium chloride made using its demonstration equipment has been further processed and converted into lithium carbonate. Four separate samples were collected from the first batch of lithium carbonate, which were then analysed for purity levels. The final product achieved a very high purity of 99.70% on average, meeting the standard required for battery grade material.
E3 is set to run phase 1 until the fourth quarter of 2025, continuing to process brine into lithium carbonate, some of which will be shared with potential customers through pre-qualification tests, a key step for offtake deals.
Chris Doornbos, President and CEO of E3 Lithium, spoke on the success of phase 1. “One of the key differentiators of E3 Lithium is its fully integrated process, from brine to battery grade products. Showcasing E3’s ability to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate with a scaled down version of the commercial facility design is a important milestone for the Clearwater Project.”
Doornbos continued. “This milestone enables E3 to progress the engineering towards the commercial facility and moves the company one step closer towards final investment decision.”
E3 Lithium analysed these results in its own lab according to the ISO TC 333 testing method, the accepted international standard for lithium testing. E3 will send samples to an independent third-party lab to confirm the results.
Phase 2 operations will deliver technical and operational data to create a feasibility study and help guide decisions on whether to move forward with full scale investment in E3 Lithium’s Clearwater Project.
