The rise of AI has amplified the need for sustainable computing. Firmus Technologies has gained recognition for addressing this challenge with its innovative AI Factory initiative.
Firmus Technologies, headquartered in Singapore, has received the Asia Pacific Data Centre Project of the Year award for its AI Factory.
This facility has been noted for its energy-efficient design and advanced infrastructure, reflecting ongoing efforts to address the growing demands of AI computing.
The AI Factory initiative entails transforming several ST Telemedia Global Data Centre (STT GDC) locations into GPU-based AI computing platforms. These facilities are built to support both enterprise and research requirements, using high-performance hardware and efficient cooling systems to deliver measurable energy usage.
This development aligns with Singapore’s broader strategy to enhance AI infrastructure. With support from STT GDC and the Singaporean Government, the initiative aims to provide businesses and institutions with early access to cost-effective GPU computing resources, bolstering the country’s position in AI research and application.
Tim Rosenfield, co-CEO of Firmus Technologies, described the project’s goals as twofold: addressing the technical needs of AI while prioritising sustainability.
“By rethinking data centre design, we have created a platform that supports the growth of AI while promoting environmental sustainability. If we can do it in Singapore, where space is constrained and the humid climate is against us, we can do it anywhere,” he said.
The company recently appointed Dr. Daniel Kearney as CTO. Dr. Kearney, formerly AWS’ head of technology for the ASEAN Enterprise business, now oversees engineering at Firmus. Commenting on the company’s progress, he noted the importance of balancing AI innovation with energy challenges, emphasising the need for sustainable infrastructure to meet growing demand.
Firmus has also highlighted its ongoing efforts through the Sustainable Metal Cloud (SMC) initiative, sharing updates on several projects:
- MLPerf training results: The company published detailed power consumption data alongside performance benchmarks, setting a precedent for transparency in the industry.
- Policy contributions: Insights from Co-CEO Tim Rosenfield were included in the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change’s recommendations on managing AI’s energy requirements.
- Industry discussions: At ATxSG24, Firmus participated in a panel with organisations like NVIDIA, The World Bank, and Alibaba Cloud to discuss the sustainability challenges of AI infrastructure.
- Global expansion: The HyperCube project, Firmus’ network of Sustainable AI Factories, is being rolled out by a team of 700 across multiple regions.
- Engagement at NVIDIA GTC 2024: Firmus contributed to discussions on sustainable AI infrastructure in panels alongside partners such as NVIDIA, Deloitte, and WEKA.
As the company continues its work, its focus remains on addressing the technical and environmental challenges posed by AI.
