A major renewable energy partnership targets grid stability challenges as Poland and Hungary accelerate their transition away from fossil fuels.
A significant expansion of grid-forming battery storage infrastructure is underway in Central and Eastern Europe, following a new agreement between GoldenPeaks Capital and Huawei. The two companies have formalised plans to deploy 500MWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), marking a substantial commitment to addressing the region’s renewable energy integration challenges.
The Memorandum of Understanding, signed by Fubin Lu, Chief Procurement Officer of GoldenPeaks Capital, and Nathan Zhao, Director of Huawei Poland Digital Power, builds upon a seven-year collaboration that has already delivered 1.7GW of solar projects across Poland and Hungary.

The partnership comes at a critical juncture as European nations grapple with the technical complexities of incorporating variable renewable energy sources into ageing electrical grids.
Addressing grid stability through advanced technology
The core challenge driving this expansion is straightforward: as wind and solar installations proliferate across Europe, grid operators face increasing difficulty maintaining a stable electricity supply. Unlike conventional power plants that provide consistent output, renewable sources fluctuate with weather conditions, creating potential instability in the electrical network.
Grid-forming battery storage systems represent one technical solution to this problem. According to the announcement, Huawei will supply its “All-Scenario Grid Forming” platform, which is designed to stabilise grid frequency and voltage during periods of high renewable energy penetration.Â
GoldenPeaks Capital will leverage its regional market expertise to deploy and operate these installations.
“Huawei Digital Power will support GPC’s energy storage strategy in Europe with All-Scenario Grid Forming capabilities and end-to-end high-quality standards covering R&D, production, and services, to jointly respond to the EU’s carbon neutrality goals,” said Jianjun Zhou, Vice President of Huawei and President of Global Marketing, Sales and Services of Huawei Digital Power.
Strategic positioning in Poland and Hungary
GoldenPeaks Capital has established a substantial presence in Central European renewable markets over the past 15 years. The company acquired an additional 283MW of solar projects under construction in 2024, advancing toward its 1GW asset target. In June 2025, the firm added 54MW/216MWh of battery storage capacity, bringing its ready-to-build BESS portfolio to 392MW/1.6GWh.
Notably, these projects have secured 17-year revenue guarantees through Poland’s capacity market auctions, providing long-term financial stability that may prove attractive to investors in what remains a capital-intensive sector.
Adriano Agosti, Founder and Chairman of GoldenPeaks Capital, emphasised the complementary nature of the partnership: “Huawei’s technological innovation and GPC’s regional business presence complement each other seamlessly. Together we are setting new industry benchmarks in advanced battery storage systems.”
Commercial applications and market context
Beyond grid stabilisation, the announcement highlights commercial applications including peak shaving, time-of-use management, and demand charge reduction. These functions allow businesses and utilities to optimise electricity costs by storing power during low-demand periods and discharging during peak hours when electricity prices are highest.
The 500MWh commitment represents a significant but measured scaling of battery storage deployment in the region. For context, Europe’s total installed battery storage capacity has been growing rapidly, though it still lags behind solar and wind installations in absolute terms.
The success of this partnership may influence whether other developers pursue similar grid-forming technologies versus conventional battery systems.
Technical and financial considerations
While the announcement emphasises technological capabilities and sustainability commitments, several practical considerations remain relevant for industry observers. Battery storage projects require substantial upfront capital investment, and their economic viability depends heavily on regulatory frameworks, capacity market structures, and electricity price volatility.
GoldenPeaks Capital’s Moody’s SQS1 sustainability rating and established financing relationships may provide advantages in securing capital for these installations. The company’s integrated approach—spanning project development, financing, construction, and operations—could potentially reduce execution risks compared to projects involving multiple separate entities.
The partnership’s emphasis on safety standards also reflects ongoing industry attention to battery fire risks and thermal management, particularly as storage installations scale up in size and are deployed closer to populated areas.
Regional energy transition implications
Poland and Hungary face distinct energy transition challenges given their historical reliance on coal-fired generation. Both nations are under pressure to meet EU carbon reduction targets while maintaining grid reliability and managing electricity costs for industrial and residential consumers.
Large-scale battery storage deployments could help these countries integrate higher percentages of renewable generation without compromising grid stability. However, the technology represents just one component of complex energy system transformations that also require transmission infrastructure upgrades, market reforms, and continued expansion of renewable generation capacity.
Whether this 500MWh deployment becomes a template for broader regional adoption will depend on technical performance, economic results, and evolving regulatory support mechanisms across Central and Eastern Europe.
